The Shirt Math: Why Press Only at QAR 9 Beats Wash and Fold for Office Wear (and When It Doesn't)

Office shirts should never go into a wash and fold bag. The bag is priced per kilo and returns everything folded, not pressed, so the shirt still needs ironing when it comes back. Send shirts as press only at QAR 9 or clean and press at QAR 15, and put everything else in the bag. That single change is the biggest saving most professionals in Al Sadd, Bin Mahmoud and Old Airport can make.

Why is wash and fold the wrong service for office shirts?

Wash and fold is a per kilo service designed for volume: t-shirts, gym wear, towels, bedding and casual clothes that are worn straight from the fold. A collared shirt is not worn from the fold. It needs a press on a form, with the collar and cuffs set, which is a separate step the bag does not include.

So a shirt sent in the bag comes back clean and folded, and then sits on the ironing board at home on Sunday night. The customer paid for laundering and still did the part that takes the most time.

Press only fixes that. You wash the shirt at home or send it for a full clean, and it comes back pressed on a hanger with a crisp collar, ready for Monday.

What does the shirt math look like for a five day office week?

Five shirts a week cost QAR 45 as press only or QAR 75 as clean and press on our Qatar list. Either route puts every shirt back on a hanger. The bag route costs less on paper but returns five folded shirts that still need forty minutes at the ironing board, the hour the service was meant to save.

Route A: press only, washed at home

This suits anyone who already runs a washing machine at home for other reasons. Wash the shirts on a cool cycle, hang them damp so they do not crease, and send them for pressing with the weekly pickup. Five shirts come back on hangers for QAR 45.

The risk in this route is collar and cuff grime. Home washing does not always shift it, and pressing sets whatever is left. Check collars before you send, and switch that shirt to a full clean if the line is visible.

Route B: clean and press, nothing done at home

Clean and press is the route for anyone who does not want to think about shirts at all. Each shirt is laundered, inspected at the collar and cuffs, pressed and hung. Five shirts are QAR 75 a week, and nothing about the shirt is touched at home between pickup and the wardrobe.

What goes in the bag and what goes on a hanger?

The rule is simple: anything you wear from the fold goes in the bag, anything that needs a crease or a collar goes on a hanger. For a typical office week that means shirts, trousers and blazers are priced per piece, while gym kit, underwear, socks, casual t-shirts and towels go into a 6kg or 12kg bag.

Here is the weekly split we would set up for one person working five office days, using current Qatar prices. Every number is from our price list.

A 6kg bag at QAR 60 is usually enough for one person's non-office clothes. Two people sharing a flat in Old Airport will generally fill a 12kg bag at QAR 120, and anything over that is charged at QAR 12 per extra kilo.

We would rather a customer send us five shirts and no bag than a bag with five shirts in it. The first order comes back finished. The second comes back with homework.

What about polos, t-shirts and trousers?

Polos and t-shirts sit on the line between the two services, and trousers do not. A polo worn to a client meeting should be pressed like a shirt. A t-shirt worn under a jacket can go in the bag. Trousers always go per piece, because a fold line across the thigh is the first thing anyone notices in a meeting.

The collar and cuff check

Before every pickup, turn each shirt collar up and look at the inside fold. A gray line means body oil has built up and a home wash will not shift it. That shirt moves from press only to clean and press for one week, then returns to press only once the line is gone. Ten seconds a shirt.

Cuffs get the same look. Ink and grime collect on the right cuff of most right handed people, and once it is pressed in it is far harder to lift. Pointing it out in the WhatsApp message is enough for it to be pretreated.

When does the bag actually win for shirts?

The bag wins in exactly one case: shirts that are worn without pressing. Linen shirts on a weekend, a casual oxford under a sweater in December, or a work shirt in a job where a fold line does not matter. If the shirt is going to look fine folded, pay per kilo and skip the hanger.

For everything worn to a meeting, the hanger route is cheaper once you count the time. A shirt that is ironed at home costs QAR 0 on the invoice and about eight minutes at the board, and eight minutes five times a week is forty minutes you did not need to spend.

How do you set up a standing weekly pickup in Al Sadd, Bin Mahmoud or Old Airport?

Send one WhatsApp message with your building, unit, a preferred day and a two hour window, and say you want the same slot every week. The driver collects the hanger items and the bag together, and everything comes back at the same slot the following week. Pickup is free on any order of QAR 50 or more.

Two habits make the weekly rhythm stick. Keep one laundry bag by the door and drop the week's casual wear straight into it, and keep the shirts on a hook beside it so nothing has to be sorted on pickup morning.

Choose an evening slot if you are out during the day, since most towers and buildings in these areas accept evening collection
Say how many shirts are press only and how many are full clean in the message, so the invoice is right before pickup
Point out any collar or cuff stain in the same message so it is pretreated rather than pressed in
If you travel, ask for shirts folded after pressing at QAR 10 so they pack flat
